Operation Care and Share at the Madison VA HospitalOperation Care and Share is a national public and private sector program for collecting and distributing non-perishable food to needy individuals.
For the 23rd year, we again have the opportunity to participate in this very successful project to support needy veterans and their families.
Thanks to the generosity of our staff and volunteers, this project has evolved from providing just a few packages each year around the holidays to having
packages available throughout the year. Each food package contains about 40 pounds of non-perishable food items as well as a 10-12 pound frozen turkey.
Food packages are distributed based on recommendations by staff in the Social Work Service.
The collection period for donations will run from September 21 through October 16. Both monetary and non-perishable food donations are accepted and should be hand-delivered to the Community Relations Service at your VA Facilitiy.
The following non-perishable food items are suggested:
* Canned fruit
* Peanut butter
* Canned vegetables
* Pie crust mix
* Pumpkin pie filling
* Uncooked pasta
* Spaghetti sauce
* Stuffing mix
* Canned tuna
* Macaroni & cheese

National Renewal Postcards
Send your membership transmittals promptly and avoid the postcards. Remember it takes a few weeks for the membership to reported at national.
RENEWAL POSTCARD SCHEDULE AND MAILING (2010) – The mailing of the SAL renewal postcard will be processed and mailed this month (September). We expect this mailing to be dropped in the mail the week of September 21st to all SAL members whose record at National Headquarter shows unpaid for 2010. A follow up postcard mailing will be done in January and in April of 2010. Just a reminder, these mailings are made in conjunction and subsequent to membership target dates. Therefore, please follow these membership target dates closely. Above all, “transmit”, as many Squadrons hold membership. This saves the organization considerable dollars in postage costs. All three mailings will be made usually within a couple of days following the target in that respective month of mailing. The membership target dates are posted on the SAL web page at {www.sal.legion.org}.

Central Region Membership Chairman ZgodaCentral Region membership team what a great morning it is in Minnesota. Looking at the September 15th membership report I see that the Central region is doing well and we did make our first goal of 10% last week. This week we are at 14.421% seven of the eight Detachments are over 10% but we need the Detachment of Missouri to work a little harder to make sure they get over the first goal. We have a ways to go to make our 25% goal on October 14th but I know everyone will be at goal by October 14th. I would like to see the Central Region over our 25% goal by the time NEC convenes October 10th – 11th in Indianapolis. The Central Region is currently in 4th place with the Southern Region leading the pack again early this membership year. As you all know the Central starts out SLOW but we gain momentum as the year progresses. Let’s see if we can get in the lead early this year and stay in the lead once we make first place.
I would like to congratulate Wisconsin for being at 24.095% and Illinois for being at 22.474% , Minnesota at 19.591% , Iowa at 16.441% ,Indiana at 13.582% ,Ohio at 11.357% , Michigan at 11.297% , Missouri at 6.721% you have all worked toward getting the Central Region to a new all time high and I know we will succeed at our mission this year. Please remember to work on getting new Squadrons Chartered in your Detachment. I look forward to seeing everyone at Fall NEC and hopefully being in FIRST PLACE by then. Please remember to thank our Soldiers and their families for their service to our Country and GOD BLESS everyone!
John Zgoda
National Vice Commander, TheobaldWe just passed the first leg of the membership year. I feel that you done very well to reach members and get the renewals in. I know that in Minnesota Dennis Henkemeyer works every week sending out information and keeping in touch with the members there. Dennis' dedication to this put his Detachment at over 19% right off the bat.
There are 2 other Detachments that I would like to hear back from. They are Wisconsin and Illinois. They reached over 24% and 22% respectively and I would like to share there success ideas with the rest of the region. What they can share with the rest of us might give new light or ideas to each of us. Sharing and thinking of a better way to do membership is important to all of us. My e-mail is connie_dennis@machlink.com .
The bar is being raised to 25% next time. Some Detachments are close to this and the rest of us have a good job in front of us to make this goal. Just a few days ago I was in my squadron meeting and talking about membership. I spoke up about this and said that the best way to get renewals and new members is to " JUST ASK ". I look forward to hearing back from you.
