Climbing to 5th in the Nation we have been having a great year, we still maintain our control of the Central Region for another day, but keep in mind the other seven Detachments want to be in our shoes. We are in the lead but still need 20 percent to reach our goal, contact your members who have lapsed, sign up new members and get your membership transmittals in promptly.
The March 9 2009 membership report is posted at this link, Membership reports are found on our web site www.wisal.org, under Membership Reports, as PDF files.
Make sure you are passing these newsletters to your Squadron Officers and members.
Keep up the great work!

Happy 90th Birthday to The American LegionAmerican Legion Birthday March 15 - 17, 1919
The American Legion was born at a caucus of the American Expeditionary Force in Paris, France. This caucus was the result of a proposal by Lt. Col. Theodore Roosevelt Jr. to a group of representatives of A.E. F. divisions and service units. Roosevelt’s vision resulted in the founding Paris caucus of March 15 – 17, 1919, and subsequent organizational caucus held May 8 – 10, 1919, in St. Louis, MO. His unwavering service during these vital times won him the affectionate title, “Father of The American Legion.”
As the weary, homesick delegates assembled for that first Paris caucus, they brought with them the raw materials with which to build an association of veterans whose primary devotion was to God and Country. In the minds of those veterans of the A.E.F. were a number of lofty ideals, uppermost among them:
1. Creation of a fraternity based upon the firm comradeship born of wartime service and dedicated to fair and equitable treatment for all veterans, particularly the disabled, and the widows and orphans whose loved ones paid the ultimate price for freedom.
2. Maintaining national security for America, including a universal military training program for the prevention of future world conflicts; and
3. Promotion of patriotism and the combating of materialistic and totalitarian ideologies that recognize neither the honor nor the dignity of the individual. Read Full Article

Veterans Day in the Capitol
By Ken Brown, Department Legislative Committee Chairman
As you all should be aware, there have been discussions at the Department Executive Committee and elsewhere regarding the effectiveness of our annual Salute to the Legislature. Because of those discussion and our like-minded veterans in the DAV and the VFW, we have come up with a mutually agreed upon alternative.
On March 31st, we will all meet at Wisconsin Department of Veterans Affairs (WDVA) Headquarters, 30 West Mifflin Street, Madison, WI.
Start time is 10:00am. The morning meeting is to brief all of those who attend on the Legislative Priorities for this biennium budget cycle. This will provide everyone with enough information to be able to speak to their elected representatives in a clear and concise manner.
At approximately 11:30am, we will break for lunch. WDVA is trying to work with a local restaurant to provide a reasonably priced buffet luncheon (expense to be borne by the individual).
At 1:00pm, we will all gather in the Capitol rotunda for a short rally.
At approximately 1:30pm we will disperse to our individual Senator/Representative’s office for a one-on-one chat regarding the Legislative priorities of the more than 400,000 Wisconsin veterans. Read Full Article

Get your Squadron on the MapSend a Post Card to the National Commander.
Commander Cisna knows that it is you the blue cap member who gets the work done and is constantly saying what great things you do, but I know that you are thinking the National Commander does not even know where my town is, so in order to change this I am asking each and everyone of you to send a postcard from your Squadrons, Districts, Zones and Detachments to the National Commander so he can see that you are out there. I want this to be a fun activity so please take a moment from your busy schedules, to do this for me, any postcard would be fine but a photo post cards of your squadron, your activities, or even your members at a golf outing would be even better. Make sure to indicate your Squadron on the postcard as they all will go into the history book for this year. Please mail them to National Commander Tommie Cisna 813 Lincoln Ave, Mattoon, IL 61938-5438
