Quotes for the day

This nation will remain the land of the free only so long as it is the home of the brave.  ~Elmer Davis

Some people live an entire lifetime and wonder if they have ever made a difference in the world, but the Marines don't have that problem.

Veterans Day November 11

The History of Veteran's Day

Formerly Armistice Day, Veterans Day is a holiday observed annually in the United States in honor of all those, living and dead who served with the U.S. armed forces in wartime. Some states observe the holiday on November 11th and others on the fourth Monday of October. Armistice Day, the forerunner of Veterans Day, was proclaimed in 1919 to commemorate the termination (at 11 a.m. on November 11, 1918) of World War I. On the first anniversary of the truce, U.S. President Woodrow Wilson issued a proclamation eulogizing fallen Allied soldiers and referring to November 11 as Armistice Day. It became a holiday in the U.S., France, Great Britain and Canada. The holiday acquired its present name and broadened significance in the U.S. in 1954. In Canada it is known as Remembrance Day, and in Great Britain, as Remembrance Sunday.

Vets and Active Duty Saluted with Free Entrée at 41 Applebee’s across Wisconsin

Applebee’s Neighborhood Grill & Bar restaurants throughout most of Wisconsin are inviting all active duty and veterans in town to pull up a chair at their favorite neighborhood restaurant for a delicious meal and heartfelt thanks this Veteran’s Day. With gratitude for their service and sacrifice, warm wishes and hot food will flow freely for these local heroes on this national holiday for dine-in guests only at participating locations throughout Wisconsin.

On Veteran’s Day (November 11, 2008), veterans and active duty personnel with proof of United States military service or wearing their uniform into the restaurant will be able to select one complimentary entrée from a selection of delicious favorites: a savory nine ounce House Sirloin, hearty Riblet Basket, zesty Fiesta Lime Chicken®, a juicy Quesadilla Burger or fresh Oriental Chicken Salad. All the traditional sides are included. “We simply want to say thank you to our veterans and active duty servicemen and women,” said Mark Dillon, CEO of Wisconsin Hospitality Group (WHG), owner and operator of 41 Applebee’s in Wisconsin. “Applebee’s is all about the neighborhood, and we can think of no one better to celebrate than these brave men and women that have served to protect all the neighborhoods that make up our country.” This is not the first time Wisconsin Hospitality Group and Applebee’s have served area veterans and active duty personnel. In 2005, WHG partnered with Wisconsin’s Mission: Welcome

Home, a veterans group dedicated to improving the lives of returning reservists. WHG contributed over quarter million dollars in food value to families of reservists serving in Iraq and Afghanistan.
